New Georgia Law Aimed at Protecting Older, Vulnerable Adults From Elder Abuse Goes into Effect

ATLANTA — A new Georgia law aimed at protecting older and vulnerable adults from financial exploitation took effect July 1.

House Bill 945 was among more than 100 new laws that took effect in Georgia last week. The measure addresses banking and finance scams involving adults eligible for protection from suspected financial exploitation.

According to WSAV, the law applies to adults age 65 and older, as well as adults over 18 who are mentally or physically incapacitated or have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Holds Can be Placed

The law allows financial institutions to place holds on accounts when potential scams are detected and establishes procedures for placing and lifting those holds.

HB 945 was sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Mike Hodges, R-Brunswick. It was also sponsored by Republican Reps. Johnny Chastain, Noel Williams Jr. and Bruce Williamson.

The measure passed May 11, 2026.
