OpenAI Previews New ChatGPT Personal Finance Offering That Allows Users to Connect Financial Accounts, Ask Questions Based On Data

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI announced it is rolling out a preview of a new personal finance experience in ChatGPTfor Pro users in the United States, allowing users to securely connect financial accounts, view spending dashboards and ask questions based on their personal financial data.

The company said the new feature is initially being released to a smaller group of users as OpenAI gathers feedback and refines the service before expanding it more broadly.

According to OpenAI, the new finance tools are designed to help users better understand spending patterns, savings goals, investments and other financial decisions by combining ChatGPT’s reasoning capabilities with real-world financial account information.

The solution appears similar to the open banking model in place in other parts of the world and which the CFPB had been championing before the Trump Administration nixed the rules.

More Than 200-Million Users

OpenAI said more than 200 million people already use ChatGPT monthly for assistance with budgeting, investment questions and financial planning. The company added that advances in GPT 5.5 have improved ChatGPT’s ability to handle “complex, context-dependent questions” related to personal finance.

Under the new system, users can connect financial accounts through Plaid, with support from Intuit expected in the future, OpenAI said.

What Users Will Be Able to See

The company said connected users will be able to view dashboards showing:

  • Portfolio performance
  • Spending activity
  • Subscription expenses
  • Upcoming payments
  • Account balances and liabilities

OpenAI said users will also be able to share additional financial context, such as savings goals, loans or planned purchases, which can be stored as “financial memories” to personalize future financial conversations.

“The vision for ChatGPT is to go beyond answering questions to help users take action towards improving their financial lives,” OpenAI said in the announcement.

Plans to Work With ‘Ecosystem Partners’

The company said it plans to work with ecosystem partners, including Intuit, to support future financial activities inside ChatGPT, such as:

  • Credit card recommendations and application assistance
  • Tax estimates related to stock sales
  • Scheduling sessions with tax professionals

OpenAI emphasized that users remain in control of their financial information and said ChatGPT cannot access full account numbers or make changes to connected accounts. According to the company, users can disconnect accounts at any time, with synced account data deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days after disconnection.

About Security

The company also said temporary chats will not access connected financial accounts and that users can delete stored financial memories whenever they choose. OpenAI encouraged users to enable multi-factor authentication to improve account security.

According to OpenAI, conversations involving connected financial accounts will default to GPT 5.5 Thinking, the company’s latest reasoning model. OpenAI said it worked with more than 50 finance professionals from leading institutions to evaluate the quality and accuracy of the new finance experience.
