Vantage West CU in Partnership to Turn Discarded Electronics into Scholarships, New Resources

MESA, Ariz. —Vantage West Credit Union has partnered with College Bound AZ on a new initiative that aims to turn discarded electronics into scholarships, laptops and other educational resources for underserved students in the Phoenix area.

The program, known as Tech for Tomorrow, is designed to address the growing challenge of electronic waste while expanding access to technology and college support services for first-generation college students, according to Vantage West Credit Union.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is among the fastest-growing waste streams globally and includes discarded computers, phones and other electronic devices. Improper disposal can create environmental hazards, while many components can be recovered and repurposed through recycling programs, the organizations said.

Under the partnership, donated electronics are collected and processed, with proceeds supporting College Bound AZ programs and helping provide technology resources to students.

College Bound AZ delivers college-access programming in partnership with the East Valley Institute of Technology, where students prepare for both college and workforce opportunities.

‘Tomorrow’s Opportunity’

“This initiative turns yesterday’s technology into tomorrow’s opportunity,” Elizabeth Paulus, executive director of College Bound AZ, said in a statement. “Every laptop we refurbish represents a student gaining the tools to succeed in college, and for many of our students at EVIT, it’s the bridge between career training and a successful transition into college and the workforce.”

Vantage West became one of the initiative’s first corporate participants by donating more than 10,000 pounds of electronic waste during the program’s initial collection effort, the organization said.

The credit union said the donation demonstrates how businesses can support both environmental sustainability and educational advancement through responsible disposal of outdated technology.

How it Works

According to the organizations, participating businesses can convert surplus technology into tax-deductible contributions that directly support student success while helping keep electronic waste out of landfills.

College Bound AZ has partnered with Bits n’ Bytes Computers to collect and responsibly recycle donated electronics.

Program organizers said a primary goal is ensuring students, many of whom are first-generation college attendees enrolled at EVIT, have access to reliable technology as they transition from high school into college and career-training programs.

“At Vantage West, we are committed to strengthening the communities we serve,” Rosanna Ramirez, public relations and market development representative for Vantage West Credit Union, said in a statement. “This partnership allows us to reduce environmental impact while directly investing in the future of local students. It’s a powerful example of how businesses can make a meaningful difference.”

Two Purposes

As College Bound AZ expands its work with EVIT students, officials said the Tech for Tomorrow initiative is intended to serve as both an environmental sustainability program and a workforce-development investment, helping align technology access with Arizona’s growing demand for skilled and credentialed workers.

Businesses and organizations interested in participating can arrange electronic waste donations through the College Bound AZ website, according to the organizations.
