VyStar Finds Itself Back in the Media, This Time Over Reporting Glitch

JACKSONVILLE,  Fla.—VyStar Credit Union has again found itself the subject of some negative press coverage, even as it reports it is resolving the issue that has had members complaining.

At issue is a mistake made by VyStar CU with the accounts of members who have paid off their mortgages. According to reports by media that has interviewed some of those members, after the final mortgage payments were made VyStar reported to the credit bureaus that the payments weren’t being made and the accounts were delinquent.

As a result, the affected members saw their credit scores being dinged, with one member telling First Coast News his own score had dropped more than 100 points.

‘Absolutely Nuked’

“I noticed my score went from about 825 and dropped down to about 713,” Member Brian Rau said during an interview with First Coast News. “Missed payment, missed payment, missed payments going over the last several months and that just absolutely nuked my credit score.”

The $13.9-billion VyStar acknowledged to the news outlet that some members have been affected by the reporting mistake.

“VyStar recently discovered a reporting issue that caused approximately 2,200 of our mortgage holders to be incorrectly reported to the credit bureaus after paying off their loans in full in 2024,” the credit unions aid in its statement. “We want to assure those members that our team is actively working with the credit bureaus to correct it as quickly as possible. There will be no impact on credit scores once the issue is resolved.”

Member Didn’t Get Message

Rau told First Coast News he had not received any notification the situation was being addressed and rectified.

In October of 2024, VyStar was fined $1.5 million for another incident that attracted even wider media coverage when its online banking system went down as it moved to a new provider in May of 2022. The platform was out for weeks, with  some features unavailable for more than six months.
