Warren, Waters Call on NCUA Inspector General to Investigate Firing of Board Members

WASHINGTON–Several Democratic members of Congress have asked NCUA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) to inspect the firings of two Democratic members of the agency’s board.

According to Bloomberg Law, which first reported the letter, sent by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the firings of Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka were part of an effort by President Trump to “skirt the rule of law, undermine independent agencies, and illegally purge the government of those who work for the American people.”

‘Legal Risk to Agency’

“The President’s actions threaten to paralyze the Board, create unnecessary legal risk for the agency, and harm the stability of our nation’s credit union system,” the letter states, according to Bloomberg Law.

The letter further states that there is a risk that any substantive actions undertaken by NCUA Chairman Kyle Hauptman, a Republican who is now the only member of the board,, would be invalid because of a lack of a quorum on the NCUA’s three-member board.

The letter requests the OIG provide any written communications between the NCUA and the White House regarding the firings of Harper and Otsuka, including analysis of the agency’s ability to function without at least two sitting board members, Bloomberg reported.

‘Why Not?’

“If no analysis was conducted, why not?” the lawmakers wrote, according to the report. “How does the OIG believe the lack of analysis affects legal and other risks for the agency?”

As the CU Daily was first to report here https://thecudaily.com/harper-otsuka-file-suit-against-trump-administration-over-firings-from-ncua-board/, Harper and Otsuka have filed suit against the Trump administration and are challenging the firings.
