6 States Holding Primaries Today; Here’s Who CUs are Backing

WASHINGTON — Six states are holding primary elections today, with America’s Credit Unions providing support to 41 candidates in those races.

States holding primaries include Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Trey Hawkins, head of political affairs for the trade group, said ACU’s political action committee is backing Rep. Andy Barr in the race in Kentucky to succeed retiring Republican Mitch McConnell. Barr currently serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions on the House Financial Services Committee and has been a “strong credit union champion and we expect him to win the open primary,” Hawkins said.

In Alabama, credit unions are backing state Rep. Rhett Marques — who has received support from a coordinated member communications campaign targeting credit union voters with digital ads and direct mail in partnership with The League of Credit Unions — in that race where redistricting has led to a special election that will be held in August.

Others Receiving Support

In other races singled out by Hawkins, the PAC is supporting:

  • Houston Gaines in the Republican race in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District
  • Rob Adkerson, the former chief of staff to Rep. Barry Loudermilk, for the 11th Congressional District seat in Georgia
  • Former Kentucky state Sen. Ralph Alvarado, who is running for a House seat in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District
  • In Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, credit unions are supporting state Sen. Sharif Street, who is looking to win the Democratic primary for a House seat.

America’s Credit Unions maintains an updated database of elections-related information in its Election Hub.
