9 CUs in Maine Sponsoring the ‘CU4Kids Colors 4 a Cause’ Event This Weekend

BREWER, Maine — Nine credit unions in the Bangor area are joining together this weekend to host a 5K color run to benefit Children’s Miracle Network.

The CU4Kids Colors 4 a Cause event, now in its third year, is organized by the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions and is scheduled for Sunday, May 16.

“The Children’s Miracle Network is just really creating miracles for these families and for these children,” Brianna Adams, loan operations specialist at Seaboard Federal Credit Union and co-chair of this year’s event, told WABI. “And it’s just a wonderful thing to see.”

Donations Total $20K

According to WABI, the chapter’s nine participating credit unions have collectively donated approximately $20,000 annually to Children’s Miracle Network Bangor in recent years.

Shauna Baker, vice president of member experience at University Credit Union, said the collaborative effort allows the institutions to have a broader impact across the state.

“We also are working collaboratively to help our community with credit unions throughout the state and making that impact much greater,” Baker told WABI.

Where the Funds Go

Funds raised through the event help purchase medical equipment and support services for pediatric patients. WABI reported one recent purchase included a supraglottic airway device used to help intubate premature infants.

“We actually know of 12 babies that it’s actually saved their lives,” Nichole Trainor, program director for Children’s Miracle Network, told WABI.

Personal for One Person

The fundraiser also holds personal significance for Danielle Hewes, vice president at Maine Savings Federal Credit Union, whose daughter spent years receiving treatment at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.

“I personally have a daughter that spent nine years of her life in the hospital,” Hewes told WABI, noting that Children’s Miracle Network-funded equipment was used during her daughter’s treatment.

Colors 4 a Cause begins Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Bangor Federal Credit Union location on Dirigo Drive in Brewer. Day-of registration opens at 8:30 a.m.
