Alabama One Working to Assist Workers as BFGoodrich Plant Begins Shutdown

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama ONE Credit Union said it is preparing to assist workers and families affected by the planned closure of the BFGoodrich plant in Tuscaloosa, which is expected to result in the loss of approximately 1,200 jobs over a two-year shutdown process beginning next year.

In a statement, Alabama ONE President and CEO Whitney Oswalt said the announcement is particularly meaningful because of the credit union’s longstanding ties to the plant.

“This news is especially significant to us because of where we come from,” Oswalt said in the release. “BFGoodrich employees are not just part of our history—they are part of our present. Many of our members, and even members of our team, are directly affected by this closure. We are committed to supporting them during this difficult time.”

Origins at Plant

According to the Tuscaloosa Thread, the $1.5-billion Alabama ONE traces its origins to the BFGoodrich plant in 1951. Oswalt said the credit union plans to provide financial support and guidance to affected employees and their families as the shutdown unfolds.

“We want every impacted employee and family to know that they are not alone,” Oswalt said. “Our mission has always been to improve the financial lives of our members, and in times like this, that mission matters more than ever. We are here to listen and to help our community every step of the way.”

Workers Urged to Visit with CU

Oswalt encouraged workers affected by the closure, whether they are current Alabama ONE members or not, to visit a local branch or the credit union’s website to learn more about available financial resources and assistance, according to the Tuscaloosa Thread.
