Hearing ‘That Voice’: Navy FCU Spot Takes a Different Approach in Promoting Mortgages

VIENNA, Va. — Navy Federal Credit Union is taking an unconventional approach to promoting its Homebuyers Choice mortgage program, using a new social media advertising campaign that features prospective homebuyers confronting the doubts and fears that often accompany the homebuying process.

According to Little Black Book, the advertising and creative industry publication, the campaign, titled “That Voice,” was produced by Dessert Before Dinner and directed by Andy Kelemen. Filmed over two days in Pittsburgh, the campaign combines professional actors with real couples and families in a documentary-inspired approach to mortgage marketing.

The campaign focuses on the internal voice that tells prospective homebuyers they cannot afford a home, have not saved enough money or have missed their opportunity to buy.

As that discouraging narration continues, the people appearing in the advertisements begin responding directly to the voice, breaking the fourth wall to challenge those assumptions.

The campaign is intended to communicate Navy Federal’s message that homeownership may be more attainable than prospective buyers believe, particularly through mortgage products designed to reduce barriers to purchasing a home.

Idea Based on Personal Experience

According to Little Black Book, Kelemen developed the campaign in collaboration with Navy Federal’s internal creative and marketing teams, with agency Tongal also participating.

Kelemen said the concept grew out of his own experience attempting to obtain a mortgage.

“The initial idea actually came from my own experience trying to get a mortgage years ago,” Kelemen told Little Black Book. “I remember having this constant internal conversation about all the reasons I couldn’t do it, even while trying to convince myself otherwise.”

He said the campaign’s approach of having homebuyers respond to their own doubts was designed to make the advertising both entertaining and relatable.

“It’s a playful storytelling device, but it comes from a very real and relatable place,” Kelemen said.

Documentary Approach to Mortgage Advertising

Although Dessert Before Dinner is known for comedy-oriented commercial productions, Little Black Book reported the company also has extensive experience in documentary filmmaking.

Kelemen and his production team previously worked on documentary projects for PBS, earning seven Emmy Awards.

That experience influenced the Navy Federal campaign, which sought to capture authentic reactions rather than relying entirely on scripted performances.

Real families and couples participating in the advertisements were encouraged to reinterpret dialogue and talking points in their own words, allowing their personalities, frustrations and natural interactions to shape the finished commercials.

According to Little Black Book, Navy Federal’s creative team also suggested having the people appearing on camera record the opening narration rather than using traditional professional voiceover actors.

Multiple Versions Produced for Social Media

Despite an accelerated production schedule, the two-day Pittsburgh shoot produced several versions of the campaign for Navy Federal’s social media channels.

According to Little Black Book, the completed campaign includes:

  • A 60-second primary advertisement.
  • A shorter 30-second version.
  • Multiple 15-second advertisements.
  • Six-second versions designed for brief social media placements.

The campaign promotes Navy Federal’s Homebuyers Choice mortgage program while addressing the financial uncertainty and self-doubt that can discourage prospective buyers from pursuing homeownership.

The advertisements emphasize that assumptions about affordability, savings requirements and mortgage eligibility do not necessarily reflect the financing options available to qualified borrowers.
