LANSING, Mich. — LAFCU said it will give attendees at this year’s Phil Denny’s Armory Smooth Jazz Fete an opportunity to help create a community art project by painting one of the credit union’s signature six-foot-tall display letters.
The credit union said festivalgoers attending the Aug. 8 event at the Lansing Armory will be invited to add color to the letter “F” during an interactive paint-by-number activity, while local artists complete original artwork on the remaining letters spelling “LAFCU.”
“The letters have become a familiar symbol of LAFCU’s community involvement, and this year’s collaborative painting gives festivalgoers a new way to be part of that tradition,” Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU’s chief marketing officer and chief diversity officer and CEO of the StableCommunities Foundation, said in a statement. “It reflects what this event is all about — bringing people together through creativity, music and community.”

Eight Years of Sponsorship
LAFCU said it has supported the Phil Denny’s Armory Smooth Jazz Fete for the past eight years as part of its community outreach efforts. In addition to the collaborative art project, the credit union plans to staff an information table featuring giveaways and its “Money Machine,” a cash-grab booth in which participants attempt to catch bills circulating in the air.
According to LAFCU, the oversized letters first appeared in 2015 as part of its “Down to the Letter” marketing campaign highlighting the relationship among the credit union, its members and the community. Since then, the display has become a regular feature at festivals, concerts and other events across mid-Michigan.
The festival is scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lansing Armory, located at 330 Marshall St. Organizers said the event will feature smooth and contemporary jazz, soul, funk and R&B performances, along with food vendors, beer and wine, local artists and merchandise. The event is open to adults age 21 and older.
