Consumer CU Commissions a 60-Foot Mural for Side of Building

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — Consumers Credit Union said it has commissioned Michigan muralist Kevin Wolfrom to create a roughly 60-foot-wide mural at its downtown office in South Haven, adding a new piece of public art to the popular Lake Michigan waterfront community.

The credit union said Wolfrom is scheduled to begin work May 4, with the project expected to take about one week to complete, weather permitting.

According to Consumers Credit Union, the mural will feature a postcard-style depiction of South Haven along with a ground-level rendering of the city’s lighthouse, designed to encourage visitors and residents to take photos.

Wolfrom said in a statement released by Consumers Credit Union that South Haven’s visual identity — including its lakefront, lighthouse and seasonal energy — inspired the design. He added that he aims to create murals that foster a sense of connection within the community.

The South Haven lighthouse, first lit in 1872 at the mouth of the Black River, is widely recognized as one of the state’s most photographed landmarks and a symbol of the city’s identity, according to the credit union.

About the Artist

Consumers Credit Union said it selected Wolfrom based on his experience creating community-focused murals across Michigan, particularly in Grand Rapids and West Michigan. The artist, a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design, is known for bold colors and designs that incorporate local themes.

“This mural represents our commitment to investing in the places where our members live, work and gather,” Consumers Credit Union President and CEO Scott Sylvester said in a statement. “Public art has a unique ability to spark pride and encourage connection.”

Goal is to Attract Visitors

Ken Overholser, the credit union’s South Haven office manager, said the project is intended to support the downtown area by attracting visitors and encouraging exploration of local businesses. He noted the timing coincides with South Haven Business Week, held alongside National Small Business Week from May 3–9.

Consumers Credit Union said it expects the mural to become a new visual landmark in downtown South Haven, complementing the city’s walkable retail district and seasonal tourism activity.
