CUs Loans Outstanding Increased in May, Even as Marketshare Slide Continues, New Data Show

WASHINGTON–Credit union loans outstanding increased 0.12% in May, compared to a 0.19% increase in April, and a 0.48% increase in May 2025, even as credit union marketshare of consumer credit continues to decline, according to America’s Credit Unions’ latest Monthly Credit Union Estimates. 

The estimates are generated from the Equifax Analytics Dataset (an anonymized random sample of credit report data that tracks 10% of all U.S. consumers with a Social Security number), the trade group said. 
America’s Credit Unions’ analysis reveals the loan growth leaders during the month were home equity lines of credit (1.35%), second mortgages (0.47%), auto loans (0.15%), unsecured personal loans (0.13%), and credit cards (0.11%). 
Declining were  first mortgages (-0.17%), secured personal loans (-0.2%) , and private student loans (-0.98%), America’s Credit Unions said.
