DuGood CU Does Good at Reality Fair for Students

BEAUMONT, Texas– Preparing students for real life without the real-life stress was the mission of DuGood Credit Union’s Reality Fair held at Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT).

A Reality Fair is a hands-on experience designed to give students a glimpse of life after graduation with realistic jobs, budgets, and financial responsibilities. This immersive event allowed students to practice compromise and make financial decisions as a family.

Upon arriving at the Reality Fair, students were assigned a career, salary, and monthly budget.  Then, they worked with a partner to visit a variety of stations representing real-life expenses — such as housing, transportation, food, entertainment, and more, the credit union said.

Throughout the exercise, financial counselors were on hand to help guide students through their decision process if they had questions.

“Our goal is to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world financial responsibility,” DuGood President and CEO Clint Wilson said.

“Many young adults haven’t had the opportunity to manage a full monthly budget before entering the workforce. The Reality Fair gives them a safe space to build confidence and develop those critical life skills.”

Although Reality Fairs are not a new concept in the credit union space, DuGood is the first to bring an event like this to their community. Wilson added that launching the Reality Fair at LIT perfectly aligned with DuGood’s mission to help LIT students “Power On” to financial success.

The event was made possible through partnerships with several local organizations and businesses, including Team Granger, Megan Moss of RE/MAX, H-E-B, Whitney Blair of Wathen, DeShong & Juncker, Main Event, Fannett Veterinary Clinic, and LIT’s Cosmetology and Childcare & Development departments. Each partner helped facilitate a station and encouraged students to make realistic decisions as they worked through their budgets.

“Like many good things in life, it takes a village to make a Reality Fair happen.  We’re truly thankful for the local businesses that shared our vision and wanted to invest in our students,” Wilson said.

The Reality Fair is part of DuGood’s broader commitment to financial education and community engagement across Southeast Texas. It represents a growing effort to bring experiential financial education to local students and prepare them for long-term success.
