From Teller to CEO (2.0): Afena FCU Names a New Leader

MARION, Ind. — Afena Federal Credit Union has named a new CEO to succeed the retiring Karen Madry.

The $97.6-million has named Misty Harrison to lead the organization effective Nov. 9, after which she will work closely with the board, employees, members, and community partners to strengthen the credit union’s financial performance, enhance member service, and pursue sustainable growth while advancing its community development mission, the credit union said in a statement.

A native of Indiana, Harrison began her credit union career as a teller at Community Link FCU in Huntington, Ind., in 1999, and advanced to CEO in 2009, where she previously served as CEO.

“I am honored to join Afena and look forward to working with the Board, staff, and members to build on the organization’s strengths,” Harrison said in a statement. “I bring to Afena a steady, hands-on leadership; a strong understanding of credit union operations; a practical approach to risk and financial management; and a genuine commitment to member service and community development. I am comfortable leading in a regulated environment while keeping the focus on people, relationships, and responsible growth.”

‘Commitment to Strong Leadership’

Afena FCU said the appointment reflects its commitment to strong leadership, responsible stewardship, and the long-term sustainability of its community development mission. Under its new CEO, the credit union said it will continue working to balance financial strength with its purpose as a member-owned financial cooperative serving its members and community.

“We are excited to welcome Misty Harrison to Afena,” Chair Mark Souers said in a statement. “We believe Harrison brings the leadership, experience, and vision necessary to guide the credit union into its next chapter.”

Afena FCU has a five-county community charter to serve Grant, Wabash, Blackford, Jay, and Wells counties.
