GAC Coverage: America’s CUs Investing $2M in CU House Renovation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – America’s Credit Unions said it will invest $2 million to modernize Credit Union House in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington.

“The modernization project is intended to re-establish the well-known entity as a gathering place for the credit union industry, constituents, and members of Congress and support advocacy efforts,” the trade group said.

Credit Union House opened in 2001, after then CUNA CEO and former Florida congressman Dan Mica pushed for its creation based on Florida House on Capitol Hill.

With the investment, America’s Credit Unions said it will have a voting seat on the Credit Union House board.

Check Presentation

A symbolic check was presented during ACU’s Governmental Affairs Conference by board Chair Patrick Pierce, president and CEO of City & County Credit Union, to Credit Union House Board Chair and GoWest Credit Union League President/CEO Troy Stang.

In his remarks Stang shared that more than $5 million has been invested to date by credit unions, leagues, and other industry partners.

BECU in Washington and Redwood Credit Union in California also announced $250,000 gifts to the remodel.

“For more than two decades, Credit Union House has welcomed credit union advocates from across the country to Washington, embracing the hospitality and relationship-building spirit that the industry exemplifies,” said Pierce in a statement. “I am proud of all that has been accomplished since its opening in 2001, showcasing the credit union difference to influential policymakers, but it is time to move our gathering place into the future and appropriately reflect where our movement is headed. Thank you to our partners in this mission and to all of those who are helping make this a premiere hub for credit union advocacy to continue in our nation’s capital.”

Thousands Hosted

America’s Credit Unions said that each year Credit Union House hosts thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world.

During the presentation, a video showing a virtual tour of the remodeled Credit Union House was shared, including a “speakeasy” inside the facility that will allow for entertaining.
