Goldman Sachs Restricts Bankers from Using Some AI Tools

NEW YORK — Goldman Sachs has restricted bankers and traders from using some artificial intelligence tools, reserving access for engineers after months of broader experimentation.

The restrictions cover tools including Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub, according to internal guidance issued last month and reviewed by Bloomberg. The tools previously had been available to bankers for use on the job, Bloomberg News reported.

The move has frustrated some traders who used AI to monitor client trading flows and produce written and graphic materials, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The restrictions mark a shift from an approach Goldman Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti described in July. In an interview cited by Bloomberg, Argenti highlighted how employees without technical backgrounds were using AI to develop software through a process known as “vibe coding.”

Those employees could then turn their creations over to one of Goldman’s roughly 12,000 engineers for further development, he said.

The Tools Available

Goldman spokesman Nick Carcaterra told Bloomberg the firm makes selected AI tools available to employees to identify potential uses across its businesses, then evaluates factors including productivity and risk management before determining who should continue using them.

“After a period of experimentation where we assess a variety of factors including productivity and risk management, we put them in the hands of those who are best suited to leverage them for the long term,” Carcaterra told Bloomberg.

The changes come as banks invest in AI while weighing its potential productivity benefits against costs and cybersecurity risks, Bloomberg reported.
