Hughes FCU Intro’s 2 Debit Cards to Generate Funds for Theater, School District

TUCSON, Ariz. — Hughes Federal Credit Union announced two affinity debit cards that will generate donations for the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation and the Vail School District Foundation, with the credit union contributing $5 for each new card issued.

The cards will support arts programming, historic preservation and education initiatives in Southern Arizona, according to Hughes.

“Supporting cultural landmarks and public education creates lasting value for our members and the wider Southern Arizona community,” Valerie Fanelli, Hughes’ vice president of marketing, said in a statement. “These affinity cards offer a tangible, everyday connection between our members’ financial lives and the grassroots organizations that enrich our region.”

Supporting The Fox

Hughes said its Fox Tucson Theatre card will support the foundation’s cultural programming, historic preservation and community education initiatives.

The launch complements the credit union’s $5 million naming rights commitment for the planned Hughes Federal Credit Union Event Center at the Fox, also known as the Hughes Center at the Fox.

The center will serve as the new Stone Avenue entrance to the expanded performing arts complex and host educational events, youth performances and regional gatherings, Hughes said.

Student Artwork Selected

The Vail School District Foundation card will feature artwork by Empire High School student Veta Roth, whose design, “Where the Desert Meets the Sky,” won a community vote Sept. 26 at Hughes’ Vail branch.

More than 100 community members and family members reviewed five finalist designs selected from 25 submissions by students at Vail-area high schools. KIIM-FM broadcast the results live from the event, according to the credit union.

The top three artists were:

  • Veta Roth, Empire High School: Received 42% of the vote and a $500 prize for “Where the Desert Meets the Sky.”
  • Jemma Byrd, Cienega High School: Received 33% of the vote and a $250 prize for “Life in the Valley.”
  • Addyson Nemits, Empire High School: Received 12% of the vote and a $100 prize for “A Resting on a Tree.”

“The enthusiasm and support from the community made this event incredibly special,” said Irlanda Cuevas, Hughes’ community engagement manager. “It was inspiring to see so many residents come together to celebrate local student talent while supporting a program that benefits Vail schools.”

The Vail card will be available beginning Nov. 1. Hughes said its $5 donation for each card issued will support teacher grants, student opportunities and academic enrichment programs throughout the district.
