TUCSON, Ariz. — Hughes Federal Credit Union and the Vail School District Foundation are asking the community to help choose a new debit card design from artwork created by local high school students.
Community voting will take place Sept. 26 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Hughes Federal Credit Union’s Vail branch, according to the credit union.
Five finalists were selected from 25 designs submitted by Vail-area high school students. The finalists’ artwork will be displayed at the branch, where attendees can vote for the design they would like to see used on a future Vail School District Foundation debit card.
Students Compete for Cash Prizes
Hughes said the students behind the top three designs will receive cash prizes. The first-place winner will receive $500, followed by $250 for second place and $100 for third.
The winning design will be announced during the Sept. 26 event and will become available to Hughes members beginning Nov. 1.
Attendees also will be able to enter drawings for $100 gift cards to Galaxy Theatres and Street Taco, according to the credit union. Food and beverages will be provided.
Hughes Vice President of Marketing Valerie Fanelli said the contest combines recognition of students’ creativity with support for local education.
“This event celebrates student creativity while creating ongoing support for educational opportunities throughout the Vail community,” Fanelli said.
Community Engagement Manager Irlanda Cuevas said inviting residents to select the design provides another way for them to support area students and schools.
Debit Cards Generate Donations
The debit card program also provides financial support to the Vail School District Foundation.
Hughes said it donates $5 to the foundation for each Vail School District Foundation debit card it issues. The money helps support educational programs and other opportunities for students.
Vail School District Foundation President Stacy Winstryg said the partnership creates funding opportunities for district programs while giving students a chance to showcase their work to the community.
Hughes said the debit card initiative is part of its broader partnerships with Vail-area schools and organizations focused on financial literacy, student achievement and community involvement.
