SWIFT CURRENT, Saskatchewan–Two Canadian CUs have received government approval for what they said is the first interprovincial credit union merger in Canadian history.
Innovation Federal Credit Union in Saskatchewan and ABCU Credit Union in Alberta said the Federal Minister of Finance has approved the merger of the two organizations, clearing the way for the legal merger that took effect on April 1, 2026.

The credit unions are operating under the Innovation FCU name. Innovation FCU has than 72,600 members across 30 branches with approximately 500 employees and $5.506 billion in managed assets. ABCU has approximately $274-million in assets.
“We are thrilled to have reached this historic first for credit unions in Canada,” Michele Wilde, board chair of Innovation FCU, said in a statement. “This merger is about more than joining forces — it’s about creating new opportunities for Canadians from coast to coast.”
The organizations said the merger is intended to position the combined credit union for future success while preserving its focus on member needs, community relationships, and cooperative principles. Innovation and ABCU also said they expect the merger to create broader opportunities for members.
