Editor’s Note: John Crews has not officially been confirmed by the Senate, as indicated in an earlier report. A resolution approved by the Senate states it: “Resolved, That it shall be in order to move to proceed to the en bloc consideration of the following nominations on the Executive Calendar:” The CU Daily regrets the error.
WASHINGTON–The National Credit Union Administration should soon have a new chairman—and, at this point, lone board member.
The Senate is preparing to confirm John Crews to lead the agency. Crews’ nomination was moved as part of the en bloc process, which involves a a package of more than 70 executive branch nominees, rather than vote on individual appointees. A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thunes (R-SD) said a vote will occur next week.
When and if confirmed, Crews’ term is set to expire Aug. 2, 2031.
Crews has been serving as the assistant secretary for financial institutions policy in the Treasury department. Crews was appointed to the position in mid-2025 and has a long history in Washington. Prior to joining the Treasury Department, he served as a policy advisor to Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), where he covered economic and financial services policy, and prior to that was the policy director of the Senate Banking Committee.

During the first Trump Administration, Crews has served on the National Economic Council as a special assistant to the President for Economic Policy.
Crews’ testimony during his confirmation hearing can be found here.
Hauptman to Exit
Crews will succeed Chairman Kyle Hauptman, who joined NCUA in 2020 and whose term expired in 2025. Hauptman plans to join the SEC’s Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, to which he has been appointed.
As the CU Daily has been reporting, the NCUA board remains a one-person operation, as Democrats Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka, who were fired by President Trump in April of 2025, continue to challenge their firings in court.
