ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Two New Mexico credit unions raised $82,612 for cancer research and treatment through the 2026 Lobo Cancer Challenge, finishing as the event’s two leading fundraising teams, according to a joint announcement from the institutions.
Nusenda Credit Union and Sunward Federal Credit Union participated in the Sept. 26 event benefiting the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. The annual fundraiser featured running, cycling and walking activities, with proceeds supporting cancer research, treatment and prevention.
The credit unions said all $82,612 raised by their teams will go directly to the cancer center, which serves nearly 15,000 patients annually. The center is New Mexico’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, according to the announcement.
“We appreciate their cooperation and competition in the Lobo Cancer Challenge to raise funds,” said Yolanda Sanchez, director and CEO of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. She said the contributions support research, education, community outreach and patient care.

Sunward President and CEO Steph Sherrodd said the effort demonstrated how credit unions can work together on community needs. Nusenda President and CEO Michelle Dearholt said employees, members and community supporters from both institutions helped make the fundraiser successful.
The institutions also highlighted other recent community initiatives. Nusenda said more than 700 employees volunteered at 13 locations across New Mexico and West Texas during its annual Community Day earlier in October.
Sunward said it raised $2,500 for the Somos Unidos Foundation at a July soccer-themed community event and awarded a total of $25,000 in scholarships to five students this fall.
Sunward has more than 175,000 members and $4.6 billion in assets. Nusenda serves more than 300,000 members, according to information supplied by the credit unions.
