WASHINGTON — A former credit union employee and current North Carolina state lawmaker is running for an open U.S. House seat, with support from America’s Credit Unions’ political action committee.
State Rep. Jennifer Balkcom was selected by local Republican officials to run for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District after U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., withdrew from the race following the state primary, according to America’s Credit Unions.
Balkcom will face Democrat Jamie Ager in the Nov. 3 general election.
America’s Credit Unions said Balkcom previously worked as a mortgage loan officer for Mountain Credit Union and United Federal Credit Union, giving her firsthand experience with credit unions before entering elected office.
The trade group said Balkcom has also supported credit union priorities while serving in the North Carolina General Assembly, including legislation enacted this year to modernize the North Carolina Credit Union Act.
‘Steadfast Supporter’
“At the state level, Rep. Balkcom is a leader in the Republican caucus and has been a steadfast supporter of credit unions,” Carolinas Credit Union League President and CEO Dan Schline said in a statement provided by America’s Credit Unions.
Schline said Balkcom was a partner in the league’s effort to update the state’s credit union law, providing guidance and support as the legislation moved through the General Assembly.
“Rep. Balkcom’s support is rooted in her experience,” Schline said. “She’s worked in credit unions in western North Carolina and understands our mission — helping people solve real financial challenges and build stronger futures.”
Regular Meetings With CUs
America’s Credit Unions said Balkcom has regularly met with the Carolinas Credit Union League and North Carolina credit union representatives at the statehouse and during league advocacy events.
“We are thrilled she stepped forward to run for the House and proud to support Rep. Balkcom as she takes this next step in public service,” Schline said.
America’s Credit Unions PAC is supporting Balkcom in the general election, the trade group said.
