SECU-MD, Towson University in New Partnership on Financial Wellness; New Debit Card Introduced

BALTIMORE –State Employees Credit Union of Maryland and Towson University have entered into a long-term partnership aimed at expanding financial wellness education and resources for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Under the agreement, SECU MD will become the university’s financial wellness partner, providing educational programming, personalized financial resources and a co-branded university debit card for members of the Towson community, the organizations announced.

The partnership builds on an existing relationship that began in 2013, when SECU MD secured exclusive naming rights to SECU Arena, the university’s 5,200-seat venue that hosts athletic competitions, concerts, commencement ceremonies and other events.

Other Components

In addition to the co-branded debit card, the collaboration will include:

  • Financial education presentations
  • Dgital financial wellness resources
  • Campus events
  • Student engagement initiatives and integration with university athletics and community programming. T

The credit union also plans to offer banking services tailored to students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Education for Different Life Stages

The organizations said the partnership is intended to focus on financial education throughout different stages of life, including managing a first checking account, budgeting, preparing to buy a home and planning for retirement.

David Sweiderk, president and CEO of SECU MD, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to helping members of the university community build financial confidence through practical education and financial services.

Increasingly Important Life Skill

Towson University President Mark Ginsberg said financial literacy has become an increasingly important life skill and that the partnership supports the university’s broader mission of preparing students for success beyond the classroom.

The organizations said the initiative comes as colleges and universities place greater emphasis on financial wellness as part of student success efforts, with the goal of reducing financial stress and helping individuals make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
