New Mexico CU Finishes Acquisition of 2 Branches of Utah-Based CU

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M–Sunward Federal Credit Union is reporting its acquisition of Mountain America Credit Union’s two Albuquerque locations is officially now completed.

Sunward, which rebranded from Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union in November 2024, first announced its plans to acquire the two branches from Utah-based Mountain America in September 2024.

SCU reported  Mountain America members approved the deal just weeks after it was announced.

‘Economic Engine’

“Sunward strives to be the economic engine of the Southwest by making banking better for all, and that mission starts right here in Albuquerque,” Sunward President and CEO Steph Sherrodd said in a statement. “Welcoming Mountain America Credit Union members and employees to Sunward means more personalized service for more members.”

The deal brings Sunward’s total locations to 15 — the majority of which are located in New Mexico — and its total members to over 167,000, according to Molly Lehrsch, a Sunward spokesperson. 

The $4.1-billion Sunward also has a location in Livermore, California.

With the acquisition, Sunward reported it will just over 15,000 members from Mountain America.

The $20-billion Mountain American has approximately 100 branches following the divestiture.
