SUPERIOR, Wis. — Superior Choice Credit Union employees distributed 200 free boxes of food at one of its branches here in an effort to help fill a gap created by the recent closure of a local food shelf.
The boxes contained shelf-stable staples, including pasta, rice and beans. The credit union said each box contained enough food to provide an individual with approximately 25 to 30 meals.
The idea for the distribution came from the credit union’s vice president of marketing and community engagement, Wessberg, who told Northern News Now she was inspired after seeing a similar food distribution organized by the Superior YMCA.
Wessberg developed the idea Monday and quickly partnered with Super One Foods to obtain the supplies.
‘Hoping to Inspire Others’
“Hopefully other businesses and community members will be inspired to do the same,” Wessberg told the news outlet.. “We know that we can’t replace the food shelf and fill that gap entirely, but if we can help during the transition period, that’s our goal.”
Demand exhausted the available food boxes within three hours. Superior Choice Credit Union began distributing them at 8 a.m. and handed out the final box at 11 a.m., according to the report.
