Suspicious? Why? Woman Indicted for Allegedly Attempting to Deposit Stolen $410K Check at CU

NEWARK, N.J. — A 30-year-old Newark woman has been indicted on federal charges alleging she used a stolen identity and a fraudulent driver’s license to try to deposit a stolen U.S. Treasury check worth more than $410,000 at a Connecticut credit union.

Madisyn Pettaway was indicted Sept. 3 on charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, theft of government property and aggravated identity theft, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Connecticut, NJ.com reported.

Prosecutors allege Pettaway tried to deposit the $410,085.48 check at a Charter Oak Federal Credit Union branch on Sept. 13, 2024. The credit union did not accept the deposit.

In June, Pettaway opened another account at a Charter Oak branch using the name Jacqueline Kennedy, according to court papers cited by NJ.com.

Authorities said Pettaway had a fake New York driver’s license and three debit cards bearing that name when she was arrested on state charges July 28 in East Lyme, Connecticut.

Released on Bond

Federal prosecutors charged Pettaway on Aug. 20. A federal judge released her on $100,000 bond.

Charging documents did not identify another person authorities allege worked with Pettaway.

Pettaway’s federal public defender could not immediately be reached Friday, NJ.com reported.
