Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to clarify that the Oct. 28 “swearing in” of NCUA Chairman John Crews was ceremonial.
WASHINGTON ―While he’s officially been in the role since August, a ceremonial swearing in was held for NCUA Chairman John Crew as the fourteenth chairman of the agency.

Crews remains the only member of the NCUA board, with Democrats Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka continuing to challenge their firing by President Trump in April of 2025.
The ceremonial swearing in took place in the historic Indian Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington.
“I appreciate the trust and support that the President has placed in me, and the U.S. Senate for confirming me,” Crews said in a statement. “I would also like to thank outgoing Chairman Kyle Hauptman for his nearly six years of service at NCUA and for the thoughtful regulatory reform effort he led as Chairman. I intend to capitalize on the agency’s progress on two of the Administration’s most ambitious goals: enabling innovation and right sizing the regulatory framework that governs the financial services industry.
The Priorities
“My priorities include safeguarding the interests of credit union member-owners, promoting regulatory efficiency, maintaining a strong and healthy National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, and supporting initiatives that promote access to affordable financial services nationwide,” Crews added in a statement.
Chairman Crews was nominated to the NCUA Board on May 11, 2026, and confirmed by the Senate on August 7, 2026. His term will expire on August 2, 2031.
Immediately prior to joining the NCUA Board, Crews served as deputy assistant secretary for financial institutions policy at the U.S. Department of Treasury, where his principal focus was on regulation, financial infrastructure, and safety and soundness matters.
Crews also previously served as policy advisor to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and as policy director for the Senate Banking Committee. During the first Trump Administration, he served at the National Economic Council in the White House as the Special Assistant to the president for economic policy.
America’s Credit Unions Expresses Congratulations
“Congratulations to Chairman John Crews on his official swearing-in as chairman of the NCUA. Chairman Crews has already demonstrated an authentic willingness to engage with credit unions as well as an interest in investing in innovation and efficiencies within the agency,” America’s Credit UnionsPresident and CEO Scott Simpson said in a statement. “America’s Credit Unions looks forward to working with the Chairman and his staff as they work to achieve meaningful regulatory modernization.”
GoWest’s Stang Attends Swearing In
Separately, Troy Stang, president and CEO of GoWest Credit Union Association, joined Crews at the ceremonial swearing in.
As the CU Daily reported here, Crews’ recently particpated in GoWest’s MAXX conference, where he outlined his priorities for regulatory relief, risk-based supervision, innovation, and a strong credit union system.
GoWest said it is actively engaging with the now chairman and his team on these priorities, bringing firsthand perspectives from credit unions across its six-state region to inform practical, durable solutions.
“Congratulations to Chairman Crews. We applaud his early focus on meaningful, durable solutions, and a stronger, more resilient credit union system,” said Stang in a statement “His participation at MAXX and willingness to hear directly from credit union leaders and advocates demonstrated the value of showing up and listening to the people closest to the issues. From Idaho to Arizona and Oregon to Wyoming, GoWest’s strength is our hyper-local expertise, our state-led and credit union-informed approach, and our ability to translate what’s happening on the ground into meaningful results at the national level. Congratulations, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue.”
